Originally the Fragrant Garden for the Blind, it was proposed in 1959 and dedicated on April 3, 1963. The garden was envisioned by Jessie Dixon Sayler of the Trustees’ Garden Club of Savannah, who was inspired by accessibility-focused gardens she saw during her travels. The garden is uniquely situated within the stone walls of a former World War I mock training fort. These high concrete walls are functional, blocking wind to help lock in floral scents. Additionally, the wrought-iron gates at the north entrance date back to 1902; they were salvaged from Savannah's historic Union Station before its demolition in the early 1960s. The space was purpose-built for visually impaired guests to experience nature through taste, touch, and smell. All plant identification plaques are provided in both English and Braille. The garden features highly aromatic plants such as Meyer lemon trees, winter daphne, mountain witch alder, cape jasmine, ginger lilies, and Florida anise. May 16, 2026 · Google ReviewThis was one of the most enjoyable places for us in the whole city. We're garden people, so there's that, but the smell of what we think was Jasmin (considering it was the first week of April when we were there, I think it makes sense with the timing) nearly made my knees buckle - one of my favorite smells in the world. By the title of this little place, I'm sure there are fragrant plants/trees/flowers there at different times of the year as well. Take a moment and go in. Sit on the stone bench in the shade. Slow everything down and take some deep breaths to appreciate the incredible gifts which come up from our mind-blowingly generous Earth! 🙂
