Jul 15, 2026 · Google ReviewMonterey Square is one of Savannah’s most beautiful and lush squares. It feels like a real attraction rather than just a pass-through park — the greenery is full, the paths are pleasant, and everything is close together enough that you can take in a lot without walking far. It is a great halfway stop if you’re walking from the river area toward Forsyth Park, especially along Bull Street. The square has a lot of historical weight, too. It was laid out in 1847 and named for the Battle of Monterrey from the Mexican-American War. The center monument honors General Casimir Pulaski, the Polish-born Revolutionary War hero connected to the Siege of Savannah. Around the square you also get some of the city’s most iconic nearby architecture, including the Mercer-Williams House and Congregation Mickve Israel. The only reason I’d give it four stars instead of five is that it can feel more like a quick scenic stop than a full destination by itself, but as part of a Savannah walk, it is absolutely worth visiting.
