Jun 11, 2026 · Google ReviewEstimated to have been growing since the early 1700s, the Candler Oak is one of the oldest living landmarks in Savannah, Georgia, and stands as a silent witness to the entire history of the city. The tree is older than the state of Georgia itself, taking root decades before General James Oglethorpe founded the colony in 1733. In 1791, the surrounding land was designated for a seaman's hospital. By 1819, the site became home to the Savannah Poor House and Hospital. In 1930, the facility was renamed Warren A. Candler Hospital—giving the historic tree its modern name. In the early 1980s, an arborist delivered a grim diagnosis: the stressed tree had less than 20 to 25 years left to live. To rescue it, a group of citizens formed the Savannah Tree Foundation in 1982. They convinced the property owners to hand over a 6,804-square-foot conservation easement specifically for the tree. This landmark agreement marked the first time in United States history that a conservation easement was established to protect a single, individual tree.
