★★★★★ Congregation Mickve Israel is one of my favorite architectural stops in Savannah. The building is stunning — the Gothic Revival style, pointed arches, tall vertical lines, stained glass, and dramatic profile make it feel almost cathedral-like, but with its own distinct Jewish identity and history. It stands out beautifully among the squares and historic homes nearby. One of my favorite details is the way it sits in visual conversation with the church behind it. I don’t know if that was intentional, but there is something really striking about the architectural continuity between the Old Testament and New Testament traditions in that view. You have this historic synagogue with a Gothic form, and then nearby Christian architecture echoing some of the same sacred design language. It creates one of those subtle Savannah moments where history, faith, and architecture overlap in a really memorable way. Even if you are just walking through Monterey Square, it is worth stopping for a few minutes to appreciate the building, the setting, and the way it contributes to the layered character of the neighborhood.

Jul 2, 2026 · Google ReviewMay have just been our favorite place to visit ! The Ladies at the front took good care of us and took us up to join a tour in progress . The tour given on the History of this spectacular temple was wonderful ! Being from NY originally we had visited many Temples and lived in Jewish neighborhoods this Temple felt like old friends! This one stands alone in uniqueness and history ! On the way out we purchased a bunch of Merch from the Ladies who were so lovely and gracious . WE LEFT WITH A SHALOM TO ALL ! And will always return when in Savanah !
May 19, 2026 · Google ReviewA beautiful Gothic synagogue. Originally the 3rd congregations in America created in 1734, after Newport and New York. The first immigrants where jews originated from Portugal through England. This edifice was built in 1870 and became officially a reform synagogue in 1904.
Aug 14, 2025 · Google ReviewMy family thoroughly enjoyed our synagogue tour. Our wonderful guide, Jackie, taught us so much about the history of the Jews in Savannah and the history of the synagogue. She was both charming and knowledgeable. The synagogue itself is stunning. A must-do when you visit Savannah.
