Savannah’s 24th and final historic square, it was laid out in 1851 and named in honor of the Reverend George Whitefield, a famous 18th-century British evangelist and co-founder of the Methodist movement, who arrived in Georgia in 1738. Long before it became a park, the land served as a burial ground, from roughly 1763 to 1844. A Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey conducted by the Lamar Institute confirmed that over 80 potential graves and burial clusters remain. This is a beautiful little square, so nice and peaceful. Whitefield Square is a great spot to take a relaxing stroll or some much needed chill time in the gazebo. Although its not exactly well lit at night it has always seemed like a pretty safe spot to me.

I absolutely enjoy all the squares of Savannah. If you ever visit Whitefield Square and encounter Mr. Bernard, the local tour guide and historian, listen to him intently, he has so much history and knowledge, specifically about Savannah, to share.
