We stopped at Monterey Square on a Sunday morning around 11:00 AM while walking through Savannah’s Historic District. It was mid-February, about 60 degrees, cloudy, and noticeably less crowded than peak season — which made it easy to take our time. Street parking in Savannah is free on Sundays, but spaces near the squares fill quickly. It took us about 10 minutes of circling before finding a spot. Once parked, everything in this area is very walkable. Monterey Square is centered around the Pulaski Monument and surrounded by historic architecture. If you’re interested in Revolutionary War history, this is a meaningful stop — General Casimir Pulaski is honored here, and interpretive plaques provide context. The square itself is shaded, landscaped, and easy to navigate. It’s also located near several well-known Savannah landmarks, including the Mercer-Williams House (from Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil) and Congregation Mickve Israel. Forsyth Park is just a short walk away, making this square a logical stop on a broader walking tour route. From a tourism standpoint, Monterey Square works well as: • A quick historical pause • A photo stop • A quiet break between larger attractions • Part of a self-guided Savannah square tour It’s not a destination that requires a long visit, but it’s a solid addition if you’re exploring the Historic District. Monterey Square is one of Savannah’s most beautiful and lush squares. It feels like a real attraction rather than just a pass-through park — the greenery is full, the paths are pleasant, and everything is close together enough that you can take in a lot without walking far. It is a great halfway stop if you’re walking from the river area toward Forsyth Park, especially along Bull Street. The square has a lot of historical weight, too. It was laid out in 1847 and named for the Battle of Monterrey from the Mexican-American War. The center monument honors General Casimir Pulaski, the Polish-born Revolutionary War hero connected to the Siege of Savannah. Around the square you also get some of the city’s most iconic nearby architecture, including the Mercer-Williams House and Congregation Mickve Israel. The only reason I’d give it four stars instead of five is that it can feel more like a quick scenic stop than a full destination by itself, but as part of a Savannah walk, it is absolutely worth visiting.

So pretty I walked around this square in what felt like a quintessential Savannah moment. It was at dusk, with a light rain and fog. The street lights were a beautiful warm natural color, so the wet streets and the spanish moss with the historic buildings gave it a magical feeling. Very memorable and beautiful.
