Monterey Square is one of Savannah’s most beautiful and lush squares. It feels like a real attraction rather than just a pass-through park — the greenery is full, the paths are pleasant, and everything is close together enough that you can take in a lot without walking far. It is a great halfway stop if you’re walking from the river area toward Forsyth Park, especially along Bull Street. The square has a lot of historical weight, too. It was laid out in 1847 and named for the Battle of Monterrey from the Mexican-American War. The center monument honors General Casimir Pulaski, the Polish-born Revolutionary War hero connected to the Siege of Savannah. Around the square you also get some of the city’s most iconic nearby architecture, including the Mercer-Williams House and Congregation Mickve Israel. The only reason I’d give it four stars instead of five is that it can feel more like a quick scenic stop than a full destination by itself, but as part of a Savannah walk, it is absolutely worth visiting.

Fascinating Pulaski is buried right here. Wow. Quintessential Savannah Georgia such an amazing place with all the Spanish moss in the architecture. It just feels like you’ve gone back in time 150 years.
