Laid out in 1851 as Calhoun Square, named after John C. Calhoun, a South Carolina statesman and U.S. Vice President. This square is historically unique because it is the only square in Savannah where all of its original historic buildings remain intact. In August 2023, it was renamed Taylor Square to honor Susie King Taylor, a pioneering nurse, educator, and author. The land was originally part of the city's common lands and sits directly on top of an early 19th-century burial ground known as the "Stranger Grounds," which served as a potter's field for unclaimed bodies and poor residents. The square is a prime stop on Savannah ghost tours due to 432 Abercorn Street, an infamous, long-empty Greek Revival mansion bordering the square that is tied to local folklore about a tragic family and paranormal activity. May 16, 2026 · Google ReviewWent here to see 432 abbercon street and take some pictures. The new owners put up a fence around the house but I was still able to get some good shots. My phone started like buzzing each time I would focus in on "the window" which I thought was scary cool. Really freaked out my husband though. Lots of history to the square and its wothe a visit.

Apr 14, 2025 · Google ReviewHad a bit of a wait at Clary's Cafe and this was a great spot to walk to while we waited for a table. Historic Charter School nearby.
Mar 30, 2024 · Google ReviewIt's an adorable little square with plenty of shade and Spanish moss. It's a great stop on a hot day. And it's even prettier when the camelias are in bloom.
