The John Wesley Monument in Reynolds Square honors the Anglican priest and theologian whose Savannah years helped shape the early story of Methodism in America. Wesley arrived in Georgia in the 1730s as a missionary, preached in and around Savannah, and later became one of the central figures in the Methodist movement. His statue, installed in 1969 near the site associated with his Savannah home, shows him preaching outdoors — a fitting image for a man whose influence reached far beyond church walls. In the summer of 2026, the monument also became part of Savannah’s living street culture when traffic cones began appearing on statues around town, seemingly as a playful or protest-style gesture layered onto the city’s long-running conversation about public monuments, memory, and who gets honored in shared civic spaces.
