Kristal & Sheikh JallowThe Davenport House Museum is a beautifully preserved Federal-style home built in 1820 by master carpenter Isaiah Davenport , tucked into the historic district on Columbia Square. We walked in without a reservation, grabbed spots in a small tour group of six, and let our guide Melanie take over from there. She was phenomenal — not just knowledgeable, but intentional. She had a way of slowing down at the details most people rush past, and making sure you actually sat with what you were seeing. The tour begins in the basement, where the Urban Enslaved Exhibit details the lives of the 13 enslaved people who lived and worked in the mansion during the 1820s. The rooms are staged with period artifacts, furniture, clothing, and linens , and the space doesn’t flinch from what it’s depicting. Then you move upstairs through the stately restored rooms of the Davenport family — the contrast is quiet and deliberate, and it lands. What struck me most was that both stories were told with equal weight and care. The free and the enslaved. That choice matters. Fine interior plasterwork, authentically restored period rooms, and a spectacular staircase are highlights of the upstairs — but honestly, it’s the human history that stays with you. In 1955, the house was nearly demolished for a parking lot, saved by a group of women who went on to form the Historic Savannah Foundation and spark a preservation movement that ultimately saved an entire city. That context layers the visit in a way that’s hard to shake. This is a place for everyone — history enthusiasts, couples, families, school groups, curious travelers who want more than a carriage tour. The small group size makes it feel personal, not performative. Five stars, no hesitation.

Desiree JohnsThe quality of our tour guide made all the difference! We scheduled this tour at the end of the day and were exhausted when we arrived, but the gentleman taking us around was friendly, engaging, welcomed questions, even tolerated silly side comments from me (I think I'm so funny...) The house is beautiful, the grounds are peaceful (schedule your 15-min wedding ceremony for next Valentine's Day), the gift shop has some great stuff, and staff is willing to sit and chat even after the tour is finished. I really liked the basement's exhibits and the detailed explanation of how/why historic downtown Savannah needed saving. The rescue of this home from becoming a parking lot is an inspiring story.

Lacy LoydThis is a great home to tour! We were blessed to have Bob as our Tour Guide. He helped us stay on track with our schedule for the day all while sharing numerous stories and details about this beautiful home and the Davenport family. He welcomed and answered all of our questions in the kindest way. I would love to have been able to tour all of Savannah with him as our guide. This home is beautiful treasure that you don't want to miss!

Dj Wez⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ My wife Jaclyn and I recently had our wedding at Davenport House, and it was truly the best day we could have ever dreamed of. The venue itself is absolutely breathtaking—our guests haven't stopped talking about how gorgeous it is. What made the experience even more perfect was the staff. Everyone was amazing, and our wedding organizer for the day was simply sensational, keeping everything running flawlessly so we could just enjoy ourselves. We would highly recommend Davenport House to anyone looking for the perfect wedding venue!

Anne RomaineWe visited on a weekday Tuesday 5/19/26 and had an awesome guide! We were visiting as Trolley employees from St Augustine. It was a must do on our list and did Not disappoint. Our guide ( John Sorrel?) took so much time answering our detailed questions and he truly was knowledgeable of the history! Also very passionate of the preservation of the home. This was one of our highlights for this trip to Savannah! Highly recommend
